Friendswood and the Holocaust
I never thought to compare the holocaust and the issues in the novel Friendswood. The Holocaust was a dark and hard time for many people. People were treated wrongly if they were not seen as the perfect race or if the derailed the idea of a perfect society. They were sent to camps were they were treated the worst humans have ever been treated. In Friendswood, Texas people were not treated this bad. Yes there were chemical dumping which affected many citizens but they were indirectly affect. The chemical dumping did not happen with the sole purpose of hurting people. But then the word indifference came up between the two and I then change my mind and related the two tragedies.
During the Holocaust many of the people had the hope that once the United States of America found out about the camps and what was happening with the they would be rescued. This is however not what happened. The United States of American knew what was happening and did not get involved right away. This is were indifference comes in. Because the United States of America did not get involved they were indifferent to the camps and what was happening. This is the worse thing for the victims in the campus. Since The United States of America was indifferent they did not care what happened. They left it alone and stay out of it which is a big issue. The issue of someone being indifferent means nothing will change and if the United States of America had stayed indifferent they would have never stop the holocaust and who knows what would be of the world today.
This now brings us to Friendswood, Texas where there was a chemical dumping incident. The chemical dumping however does not have to with the issue of indifference. After the whole town of Rosemont, Texas had to relocate to Friendswood because of the chemical dumping, a new company wanted to build on the land. They did not care that the land was contaminated and was harmful to the people who would be in contact with it they just wanted to make money. The mayor and town council was also indifferent to the issue. The only character who care was Lee whose daughter died in the chemical dumping. Everyone else indifferent though cause they permission of building to be granted to the company. If Lee was also indifferent the company would have gone through with the constructing hurting numerous citizens. Lee cared and was angry and because of this she stopped the constructing and saved the fate of those people.
Both the Holocaust and Friendswood, Texas were affected because of indifference. Indifference is a scary thing because if no one care then nothing will change. If nothing change many people would get hurt and things could go very wrong. The issue of indifference makes to issue that aren't the same, related to each other.
